The file transfer protocol, or FTP, is one of the oldest means of transferring data between systems. You can request an FTP account to share data with other people.

Once you have an FTP account, your password for the FTP server is unique solely to FTP and should not be the same as any other password. The password is passed in clear text due to the security settings of the FTP service. You will not be able to authenticate via SSH, SFTP and SCP with your password. You may only connect via plain FTP.

When you authenticate to FTP, you will be placed directly into your home directory and will be limited only to that directory. Your home directory is where you should place files for anonymous users. Anonymous users can change directories and transfer the files they need. They will not be able to upload files unless special permissions have been requested via a help ticket.

The FTP directories are not backed up and the files are publicly visible. Please take consideration when placing files for others. In addition, once the files are no longer needed, please remove them so other staff have ample room to upload files.

Your home directory is located at /pub/<homdir>, but anonymous users will only need to go to /pub/<homedir> upon logging in.
