Restrictive Fares

American, United and Delta offer deeply discounted "Basic Economy" class airfares between certain cities.

These fares are:

  • Non-refundable
  • Non-changeable (limited same day change is allowed for a fee)
  • If not used as booked, are forfeited.
  • Pre-reserved seats are not permitted.

Because these fares are so restrictive and not conducive for business travel, UCAR has requested Cain remove these fares from our company's search results. If you wish to book these restrictive fares, you will need to contact a Cain agent. So, if you’re finding a discrepancy be sure to confirm you’re comparing the same fare type.

At this point, Southwest Airlines does not offer the types of fares mentioned above and are not included in the restricted offerings.

Frontier Airlines does not offer the ability to purchase a refundable fare (The Works) through Concur so contact your Cain agent representative if you wish to purchase one. Additionally, if you wish for Cain to secure for you a pre-assigned seat assignment or bags on a Frontier Airlines reservation, please add a request to this effect in the 'comments to travel agent' box on the trip information page. A fee of $10.00 applies, in addition to the $8.00 on-line travel agency fee.

Refundable Tickets in Concur

Travelers and Coordinators may purchase/view refundable fares through Concur by checking the box in the initial search.

Or you can also View Details in the results and then choose "View More Fares" (bottom left hand corner of results) to see all different fare options.

Airline Tickets Purchased with Personal Funds

UCAR travelers are encouraged to purchase tickets through Concur/Cain using the Lodge card which is our direct billed credit card.

UCAR 5-7 Travel policy addresses that individuals are only reimbursed for airline tickets that were utilized. This procedure is in place because for tickets purchased through Concur/Cain on the Lodge card, UCAR retains visibility of unused tickets available for re-use.

See the excerpt below from UCAR Travel Policy 5-7. Section 2. Airline Travel (Paragraph 3).

Travelers purchasing tickets without using the lodge card theoretically “own” the ticket and will only be reimbursed for the portion(s) of the airline tickets that were utilized.
